Custom Segments

Build the Exact Market You Compete In

Your real competition doesn't fit inside one Amazon category.
SmartScout's standard views follow Amazon's structure: one category, one subcategory, one brand. Custom Segments lets you ignore that structure and build a market from the exact pieces you choose.

What You Can Group

A segment is any mix of these five. Use one type or all five.
We took Amazon's raw SQP data and rebuilt the experience from the ground up. The result is an SQP explorer that's easy to navigate, surfaces the most important data first, and injects SmartScout's competitive intelligence throughout.

A segment can be six brands across three categories, or one category plus a set of sellers plus the search terms that feed them.
Use cases

Three Segments People Actually Build

Brand owner

A brand owner measuring real share.

Your own brand, plus the five brands that genuinely cross-shop against you, pulled from two different categories. A subcategory view would have shown you crowded or clear for the wrong reasons. This segment shows how revenue actually splits among the brands you compete with, and which of them is gaining on you.
Agency

An agency framing a pitch.

Before the call, an agency groups the prospect's category, its top brands and sellers, and the main search terms into one segment. Instead of opening a blank search in front of the client, they walk in with the prospect's market already drawn: the major players, the terms that move volume, and how revenue has been shifting, in a single view.
Prospector

A prospector sizing an opportunity.

Someone evaluating a set of brands for acquisition or wholesale groups exactly those brands into a segment to size the pocket and see who inside it is growing. The market is defined by the shortlist they care about, not by whatever category those brands happen to sit in.
The reasoning

Why Define The Market Yourself

Competition is set by what buyers cross-shop, not by where Amazon files a product. When your analysis inherits Amazon's category tree, every share figure and trend is scoped to Amazon's definition of your market rather than yours.
Instead of looking at a TikTok Shop and wondering whether it’s actually performing, SmartScout helps you evaluate the business behind the storefront.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine different types in one segment?

Yes. Any mix of categories, brands, sellers, products, and search terms in a single segment.

How is this different from filtering a category?

A filter keeps you inside Amazon's structure. A segment defines a market across it, including pieces Amazon files in unrelated categories or under different brands.

What can I actually see inside a segment?

The brands and sellers in your market, how revenue and market share are split among them, the top search terms, and how those numbers are moving.

Can I build more than one?

The Basic plan allows you to build one custom segment. If you need to build more segments, you will need to upgrade your plan to Essentials or Business tiers.

Who is it for?

Brand owners measuring real share, agencies framing client markets for pitches, and sellers prospecting brands or sellers for wholesale or acquisition.
